Results for the Institution’s 2023 International Elections announced

Find out which candidates were successful in their bid to become Regional Chair and Regional Young Member Representative in the Institution’s Middle East & Africa and South Asia Regional elections 2023.

The Institution is pleased to announce the results of the 2023 Regional Elections. We would like to welcome these newly elected members as well as all the new volunteers who have been elected throughout the international network:

Middle East and Africa Region

Regional Chair: Muhammed Uneeb FIMechE

Muhammed Uneeb is a Power industry executive with over 35 years of experience in various power plant technologies; remained employed, for major part of the career with British and French multi-national Companies (National Power, International Power, GDF Suez) reaching superannuation in August 2021.  The last assignment was Station Manager at HUBCO 1292 MW Oil fired plant at Hub.  

Presently working privately as Consultant with following areas of interest: Due Diligence, Net Zero Emissions, Leadership, Operation Plant Engineering Risk Assessment, Capacity Building of the Work force.

Graduate Mechanical Engineering with Masters degree from University of Wisconsin Medicine, USA and PhD from Imperial College London.

Region Young Member Representative: Ifeanyichukwu U. Onyenanu MIMechE

Ifeanyichukwu Onyenanu PhD. CEng. MIMechE is a meticulous mechanical engineer with a passion for problem solving. He has over 10 years of pioneering experience in the design and development of single seater race car with the first Nigerian Race Car Manufacturing Group. He has continuously involved in the research, innovation, design and development of state-of-the-art for advanced engineering design, manufacturing and materials. He led the first Nigerian team that participated in the IMechE - Formula Student Competition, won the Global Population Challenge in 2011, YM award for innovation in the field of Engineering, 2015 and YM volunteers of the year award in 2016.

South Asia Region

Region Chair: Chanaka Wanniarachchi FIMechE (re-elected for a second term)

Chanaka Wanniarachchi is the Managing Director, GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceuticals for Sri Lanka & Maldives business. He has gained hand on experience as an engineer, Health and safety professional for more than 20 years before moving into general management. Chanaka has worked in railway, glove manufacturing, Ceramic tile manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries.

Chanaka served as IMECHE SAR Chair during the pandemic time and the resilience of the team was amazing. His most treasured experience as IMECHE volunteer is donating a building with a physics, computer lab to a rural school in Sri Lanka.

Region Young Member Representative: Shivaskaran Kanthalingam MIMechE

Shiva Kanthalingam joined IMechE in 2010 while being an engineering student with the hope of enhancing opportunities for my studies and carrier. In 2013 his membership was upgraded to associate membership which signified his commitment to the profession. In 2019 Shiva became a corporate member of IESL which enabled him to gain benefits such as training opportunities, networking events, peers and industry leader's appreciations. Achieving corporate membership in IMechE in 2020 has highlighted his professional carrier further with much more recognition from the industry. Overall, the memberships he has gained have always been a significant milestone in his career.

The duration of office for these Regional representatives is three years. 

The Institution would like to take the opportunity to especially thank all the international volunteers who have stood down this year. Their contribution has made a significant difference to raise the profile of the Institution as well as supporting the existing international membership. The work of volunteers is an essential part of the Institution, without which we wouldn’t be achieving the successes we have seen over the last few years, especially in the international arena. 

We welcome all members to join the Institution in congratulating the newly elected regional representatives for the international network.
