President's statement

Trust has been the central theme of my term, and it continues to guide my priorities and decisions into 2026. 

That trust was clearly demonstrated by members: of those who voted on the future of our headquarters, almost 70% supported the resolution. This is not a decision to sell, but a key enabler that justifies the expenditure of resources ahead of a decision being made by trustees. While the confidence shown by members gives us a strong mandate to continue, we have taken time to pause and reflect, recognising that more work remains to be done. 

Members also placed trust in the Institution to take long-term decisions on financial sustainability. The pension arrangements are now operational, delivering ongoing savings. I would like to acknowledge the significant contribution of Isobel Pollock-Hulf, and to recognise Ian Josebury for assuming the role of Chair of the Pension Trustees.

Throughout 2025, members delivered impressive work across the UK and internationally. We marked 200 years of the modern railway, reflecting the global impact of engineering. Strengthening our global presence remains a priority for IMechE, but it had been more than a decade since a President had visited the Oceania Region, and during my visit I learnt about a Māori tribe, visited universities, and saw first-hand the work of companies at the cutting edge of engineering and technology. 

Our commitment to future engineers remained strong, with more than 3,600 students from 33 countries taking part in our engineering competitions. For the first time, both the President and the Chair of Council are former Young Members Board representatives; proving youth is not a barrier. 

Internally, we continued to strengthen governance and operations. A culture review, engaging over 200 staff and members, has given us findings to address and to ensure we continue to learn, improve, and meet the expectations of the Charity Commission.

I would like to recognise a period of change within the staff team and thank colleagues for their dedication and service. In particular, Dr Alice Bunn, who shaped a clearer, more outward-facing strategy, and Joann Passingham, who joined us as Chief Operating Officer in June and stepped up as Interim Chief Executive Officer in October, delivering operational improvements with a clear focus on our Purpose. 

Looking ahead, I will continue to spend time with members, focusing on trust in our profession, and showcasing the people behind the engineering and the impact you make. Thank you again for your continued support, engagement, and trust.
