Drew is a Chartered Engineer, a senior executive with wide experience in the industrial sector and a long-term active member of IMechE.
Following a five-year engineering apprenticeship he gained an HNC in Mechanical Engineering, he subsequently achieved, as a mature student, a first class honours mechanical engineering degree from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh.
The early part of his career was in the heavy forging sector. He migrated from design to general management and was engaged as the Forge Manager at Fife Forge Limited, moving then to become a Director in the light manufacturing sector with AC Penman in Dumfries.
In 1981 he was head hunted to Associated British Foods plc., where he achieved his senior position Divisional Chairman for “non-food” activities, which included flexible packaging, folded cartons, glass bottle manufacture, laminates and vehicles. Profit responsiblity for the Division, involved dealing with strategic, market and business situations including M&A activity.
In 1995 Drew moved into consultancy focused on SME sector development and diversification, implemented through his companies Impact Engineering Management Ltd and in 2003, with Thistle Management Ltd.
SME’s are an important sector in the UK and require both a specialist skill set and an entrepreneurial approach to achieve an element to success. His specialist engineering and business skills led to many and varied commercial assignments, in a range of sectors including packaging, chemicals. education, automotive, tube manipulation, window manufacture, precision machining, publishing, environmental and metal forming.

Drew has been a member of the IMechE since 1977 and was made a Fellow in1985. He has been very active in Institution activities and programmes, focusing on providing value guidance to early career engineers, particularly on employability
