Summary

Calculate energy savings: apply the fundamentals of energy, power and efficiency calculations to appraise project cost saving and build a business case.

Energy efficiency sits at the heart of our future competitiveness and as the foundation for our net zero ambitions to mitigate climate change.

As organisations look to reduce their carbon footprint, it is essential for those applying for capital funding to be able to put a business case together to showcase the energy savings .

This course will show how the fundamental concepts of energy, power, and efficiency can be combined with basic system attributes and data to model almost any system’s energy performance.

These models can be used to explore optimisation opportunities and identify / rank potential energy saving projects.

This two day course will illustrate how the outputs from these calculations can be used to build simple lifecycle appraisals of energy, GHG and cost savings for typical projects.

Participants will apply and practice these learnings with a range of common energy / net zero investments, such as in developing outline business cases for:

- switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump,

- upgrading to LED lighting / improving controls,

- investing in variable speed drives for pumps and fans,

- recommissioning/upgrading building management systems (BMS),

- investing in building fabric improvements.

There will also be the opportunity to work through examples of how these foundational principles can also support energy managers in evaluating detailed recommendations and savings forecasts made by technical specialists.  Are the claims over egged, or based upon reasonable assumptions?

Participants will be encouraged to apply these techniques to projects they are investigating in their day-to-day work, leading to direct benefits when they return to the office.

Who should attend?

  • Early career professionals wanting to better understand and apply energy fundamentals.
  • Sustainability specialists from related disciplines wanting to better understand energy fundamentals.
  • Engineers wanting to explore the process of developing energy efficiency business cases.
  • Those working in non-technical roles related to energy and net zero who want to deepen their knowledge of the sector.
  • Senior leaders wanting to better understand energy opportunities available to their organisation / as presented by specialists.

Summary: Engineers- developing energy business cases, Sustainability specialists and non-technical individuals in energy sector wanting to better understand energy fundamentals.  Senior leaders wanting to understand organisational energy saving opportunities.

How will I benefit?

  • Apply energy fundamentals in developing business cases for investment in energy efficiency both internally and externally to the business
  • Work through a series of common examples, e.g.:

    - heat pump to replace a gas boiler,

    - building fabric upgrades,

    - variable speed / control upgrades,

    - lighting upgrades
  • Calculate the associated energy savings in terms of: cost, energy and GHG (CO2e).
  • Apply typical project appraisal frameworks, e.g. payback period, lifecycle cost analysis, cost of carbon, scenario analysis as a presentation tool.
  • Place these energy saving opportunities in context, e.g. as referenced against an organisational net zero target.
  • Turn projects into a business case
