Summary

Understanding the energy transition in the context of energy system security and resilience.

Much of the discourse around the ‘energy transition’ has centred on decarbonisation and ‘net zero’. While policies to reduce emissions remain strong and widespread around the world, it has always been the case – and even more so in today’s geopolitical environment – that countries value energy security above all. It has also always been the case that, for many countries, the energy transition has been viewed as a pathway towards greater energy security and not simply an environmental nicety.

That said, the energy transition comes with its own challenges around energy security, both from a geopolitical and trading perspective and an internal, system resilience and reliability one.

This course provides attendees with an independent, hype-free and numbers-focused perspective on the full range of energy transition and security issues, including access to resources (such as minerals, land, money and more) and the challenges of balancing greater percentages of ‘weather-dependent’ supply. It integrates such issues with crucial, practical barriers including political and deployment ones, creating a framework within which to better understand how and where new growth markets are likely to emerge.

Who should attend?

The course is aimed at commercially focused people who need a solid, independent and integrated understanding of the opportunities and risks created for firms by the renewed focus on energy security against a backdrop of energy transition.

This will include job roles such as business and product development; those responsible for strategy, market analysis and policy; and engineers seeking to better understand the market context of their products.

How will I benefit?

After the course you will be able to:

  • The company could proactively identify and mitigates emerging energy supply chain, geopolitical, and grid instability risks to avoid disruption.
  • Provides data-driven insights to evaluate complex energy pathways (hydrogen, grids) for optimal, future-proof investments.
  • Equips teams to build contingency plans for energy price volatility and physical disruptions, ensuring business continuity and prevents costly mistakes
Contributes 14 CPD hours

Key topics

  • The energy transition and its features, from global scale to country variations
  • Resource requirements, constraints and supply chain bottlenecks
  • The new geopolitical realities of energy transition pathways
  • The impacts of transport and heat electrification on the power system
  • Available and emerging solutions to balance a grid with ‘variable’ supply
  • Integrating alternative, ‘clean’ fuels into increasingly electrified energy systems
  • ‘The Internet of Energy’ and how it will coexist with traditional, centralised approaches
  • How security-focused approaches to the energy transition are creating new market solution opportunities
