The Institution's Southern Asia Region organizes its first ever Photograph Competition for Young Members

One Young Member was proud to be selected as the winner of the Southern Asia Region (SAR) Photograph Competition 2014, by a panel of judges. The winner will be invited on an all-expenses paid trip to attend the “Engineering Tomorrow” event to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 7 – 8 November 2014.

Mechanical Engineering has been one of the oldest disciplines in engineering, which also makes us feel proud to be a mechanical engineer. However, over the past decades mechanical engineering has seen immense diversification, leading to its penetration in almost every aspect of human life. Inspired by this thought, the theme for the photograph competition was chosen as “MechE Diversified”. The competition was conceptualized and launched on 4 June 2014, as a preface to the “Engineering Tomorrow” event, and was open to all Young Members of the Southern Asia Region. It ran for 10 weeks and wide participation was received from across the region. A three member judging panel was setup with Newton Wickramasuriya CEng FIMechE (Sri Lanka), Hassan Ghayasuddin Ansari CEng FIMechE (Pakistan) and Dilip Chawathe CEng FIMechE (India) as the judges.

Siddartha Khastgir- recently announced as this year's Young Member Visionary -organised the SAR Photograph Competition. He said: “we were fortunate to have a distinguished panel of judges who also happened to be avid photographers themselves. Even with the geographical boundaries, we were able to have an intriguing debate over the winner. I would like to thank all the judges for their time and efforts.”

The idea of the competition was to grow our Young Member base in the region and increase their international exposure. Thanks to social media, the event was able to generate considerable interest among affiliates and associates and also prompted some to become new members. The winner will be felicitated at the Engineering Tomorrow event.

One of the judges Newton Wickramasuriya said: “Mechanical Engineering Diversified’ was a good theme for a photographic exhibition.  It opened a wide potential and should have generated more interest and attracted more entries.  Never the less it was refreshing to see some creative photographs among the entries.”

The winner is Aaqib Raza (Affiliate Member from Pakistan) and the winning photograph is below, entitled Human carriage made by minimum resources and cost

Another judge, Dilip Chawathe said: “SAR Photographic Competition for young members is a good initiative for young engineers to show their photographic skills. There was good response from young members to display their photographic talent with an eye for engineering.”

Special appreciation for the photographic value has be given by the judges to the below entry from Waqas Ahmed (Affiliate Member from Pakistan), entitled Die Casting:
