How to apply

You can become a member of the Institution whether you’re a student, apprentice, graduate, qualified engineer – or if you just have an interest in engineering.

Choose one of the following options to start your application.

Professional registration

To be Professionally Registered, you will need to be able to meet certain academic standards and demonstrate our professional requirements. There are three different registration types for professional engineers at Member (MIMechE) grade:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng)

Professional engineers who develop answers to engineering problems using new or existing technologies in creative and innovative ways.

  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng)

Professional engineers who maintain, manage and apply current and developing technology. You might be working in fields like engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operations.

  • Engineering Technician (EngTech)

Engineering Technicians are concerned with applying proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems.

  • Armed Forces and MoD

If you are serving in the Armed Forces or the Ministry of Defence (MoD), you can use the simplified route to professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Engineering Technician (EngTech).

Other membership grades

  • Fellow

The highest class of membership of the Institution. Fellows are typically professional engineers working in a senior role with significant autonomy and responsibility.

  • Associate (AMIMechE)

Graduates with an undergraduate degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) subject can apply to become an Associate Member of the Institution.

  • Affiliate

Join as an Affiliate if you’re a part-time, sandwich or full-time student or apprentice – or if you just have an interest in engineering.

Engineering Council update (January 2014):

Third Edition of UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC):

Following a recent review the Engineering Council have updated the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). The UK-SPEC now includes a new competence under section E. Competence E5 requires candidates to provide evidence of how they, ‘exercise responsibilities in an ethical manner’.

Formal assessment of this new competence will not begin until January 2016. Any application scheduled for interview after this date will include assessment of this new competence. Over the next few months the Institution will work with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth implementation of the revised standard across all our systems and processes.
