APPLICATION CHECKLIST
1. Knowledge and understanding
You need to demonstrate the right level of engineering knowledge and understanding - Master’s level or equivalent.
There is no single route. Your knowledge can come from:
- An accredited MEng degree
- An Accredited BEng (Hons) plus further learning (e.g. MSc, structured development)
- Work-based or experiential learning developed over time
What matters is not just qualifications, but your ability to:
- Understand and apply engineering principles and theory
- Use your knowledge to solve complex problems
- Keep your knowledge up to date as technology evolves
Key guidance:
Don’t worry if your qualifications don’t exactly match the “standard route”- many successful applicants demonstrate:
- equivalent learning through experience
- or through individual assessment of your academic qualifications.

2. Competence: Development and demonstration
Chartered Engineer registration is based on
what you can do in practice. You must demonstrate your competence against the
five UK-SPEC areas (A-E).
You’ll need to show evidence of:
- A – Knowledge and understanding
- B – Design and development of solutions
- C – Responsibility, management and leadership
- D – Communication and interpersonal skills
- E – Professional commitment (ethics, CPD, safety)
Competence can be developed across a wide range of roles and sectors in mechanical engineering, including, but not limited to:
- Design, analysis and R&D
- Manufacturing, operations and maintenance
- Project management or consultancy
- Emerging and interdisciplinary areas
There is no single job title or career path.
What’s typical?
- Most engineers take about 4 years minimum to build the required level of experience
- You will usually need to show increasing responsibility, such as:
• Leading work packages or teams
• Making technical decisions
• Managing risk, cost or performance
Key guidance:
- Think broadly - your competence can be built across multiple roles or projects
- Focus on impact and responsibility, not just tasks
- Record your development and reflect on your learning (e.g. CPD, achievements, challenges)
3. Professional review (Assessment)
The final step is a formal assessment of your competence and commitment, known as the Professional Review.
You will typically:
1. Submit an application demonstrating your competence
- Personal competence statements
- Career history and key achievements
- Supporting evidence and sponsors
2. Attend a Professional Review Interview
- Discuss your experience with trained assessors
- Demonstrate your technical understanding, judgement and professionalism
3. Receive a decision on your application
Assessors will want to see that you:
- Meet the UK-SPEC competence standard
- Can apply your knowledge in real-world situations
- Show professional judgement, responsibility and ethical awareness
Key guidance:
- Your application should clearly show what you personally achieved.
- Use clear examples that demonstrate depth, complexity and responsibility.
- Prepare for the interview by reviewing your application - you’ll be asked about it in detail.
