Do you know a Young Member who volunteers in their spare time for the Institution or who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the engineering profession?

August marks the launch of the 2020 Young Member of the Year Awards, which seek to recognise the outstanding contributions made by Young Members of the Institution.

This year the Young Members Board will be awarding three individual awards for outstanding contribution in the following categories:

  • IMechE Volunteer of the Year
  • Developing Engineer of the Year
  • Young Member Visionary.
  • It is really important to celebrate people who go above and beyond because these are the people that can and will inspire us and others to do great things. Volunteers frequently invest a lot of time and effort simply because they feel passionately about what they do and believe in the cause they are supporting. Most volunteers are not after recognition but it’s always nice to show appreciation.

Two previous IMechE Volunteer of the Year award winners reflected on their achievements:

Nick Valentine, said he was proud to have been recognised with the award. “This award has shown to my employer my commitment to advancing engineering and supporting others. They are very supportive of my volunteering and have seen the way it has enabled me to further develop and grow as an individual. I certainly see this being beneficial to my future career and my continued volunteering.”

Roshni Wijesekera believed that the award was a great way of encouraging others to volunteer. “I think volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to champion the causes you are passionate about within engineering. For example, volunteering with the IMechE amongst many other things gave me the opportunity to promote engineering in schools, celebrate diversity and inclusion within our profession, and encourage collaboration with engineers across all disciplines.”

Engineering excellence is also vitally important. We need great role models who will inspire others to choose engineering and will demonstrate to those already in the profession just what is possible with hard work and effort. Winning an award can help Young Members to get recognition and opportunities that will help them develop themselves and their careers.

Last year's Developing Engineer of the Year, Nilla Karlsen-Davies said “…this award validates the path I’ve chosen and the kind of work that I’m doing. It shows my employer that I’m taking an active approach to my continued development, being recognised by an external body for my technical skills, business acumen and transferable skills."

The awards are open to all Young Members of the Institution. Any Young Member can be nominated or may self-nominate for one or several of the awards.

Those who demonstrate all-round excellence in both engineering and volunteering qualify for the Young Member Visionary Award.  Nominate a Young Member and you will help us identify these inspiring role models.
