2019 Fuel Tank and Filler Neck Design Requirements

Formula Student Team

Teams are advised that, due to a change in the rules for 2019, the entire fuel tank, including fuel filler neck, must completely lie within the ‘rollover protection envelope’.

This is required by the following rules:
“CV 2.2.2 The fuel tank must be located within the rollover protection envelope, see T 1.1.15.”

The fuel tank is defined by CV 2.3.1:
“CV 2.3.1 The fuel tank is defined as the part of the fuel containment device that is in contact with the fuel. It may be made of a rigid material or a flexible material.”

During the SES checking process this was identified as a common issue for teams (all affected teams were notified as part of their SES feedback). Please be advised that at the event, Scrutineers will fully enforce the requirement of CV 2.2.2 and CV 2.3.1.

Note that it is the responsibility of the teams to read, understand and design their vehicle(s) in line with the rules of the competition. Due to the issues raised during SES checking, in this case the event organisers have chosen to give extra guidance to avoid the need to modify fuel tanks at the event. Any modifications to fuel tanks will be closely inspected and will only be approved if completed ‘in accordance with good engineering practices’ as per rule T 2.1.1.

Make sure you are aware of all the rules for your competition class - review these on the Rules page.
