PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Background

  • The HQ Working Group (set up in May 2022) and following on from the work of the Real Estate Strategy Group (RESG) submitted a draft business case to the Trustee Board in January 2023 for the future needs of the Institution’s Headquarters (HQ) building and for the building options at Birdcage Walk or elsewhere.
  • Further information was required to complete the business case to determine and recommend the best option/s for the future.

The HQ Programme Board

  • The HQ Programme Board was established in May 2023 to oversee the completion of the business case and to submit a recommendation (report) to the Trustee Board.
  • Baker Stuart, a programme management company with expertise in this field have been engaged to manage the programme (consisting of all the workstreams identified) They will work with the Institution (providing assurance) and will also engage other third-party experts. They will report into the HQ Programme Board

Vision

The HQ needs to deliver the Institution’s vision of a global, inclusive, and digitally enabled engineering community. It should promote engineering in the modern world whilst reflecting the Institution’s prestige and history.

Key objectives

  • Enable staff and members to deliver the strategy, aims and objectives of the Institution.
  • Act as the global HQ for IMechE.
  • Promote engineering as a profession showcasing the benefits and impact of engineers on society. 
  • Reflect and amplify the institution’s desired global brand personality and public perception.
  • Represent value for money to the members in order to ensure other strategic objectives are suitably funded.
  • Be an opportunity to promote best practices in decarbonisation and the use of technology.
  • Enable the Institution to influence policy and shape the global agenda on issues related to the profession.
  • Have equal accessibility for all.
  • Promote and showcase equality, diversity, and inclusivity within engineering.
  • Be fit for purpose and support both staff and members in the smooth operation of their activities.
  • Provide a workplace that supports modern global digital working practices and the well-being of the building users.
  • Be welcoming to members, staff and visitors alike.
  • Be somewhere members can be proud of.
  • If space allows support science and education.
  • Be maintained and updated on an ongoing basis to deliver the future requirements of the Institution.
  • Enable collaboration with other PEIs and key strategic partners.
