Summary

Understand how to assess sustainability in design and manufacturing to build a robust business case.

End consumers, businesses in a supply chain and investors are becoming increasingly more demanding that the products and services they use have been developed and produced on a sustainable basis.

Products are produced and consumed in systems. These ‘systems’ in the past were often regarded as linear; namely design, produced, finite-use and dispose. Today, circular systems which rethink how product resources are used and reused are offering new business opportunities e.g. provision of associated services, product updates during customer use and end-of-life reuse schemes.

This course focuses on helping organisations to understand how to assess sustainability practices including influence on supply chains, product use, end of life (e.g. can it be recycled, disposed, reused etc) to produce a business case for incorporating sustainable practices in way that go far beyond just “going green”.

Who should attend?

  • Business and engineering leaders
  • Business strategists
  • New product development

How will I benefit?

  • Make a sustainability assessment of your existing situation
  • Be able to measure a product’s carbon footprint equivalent (journey to net-zero)
  • Identify opportunities presented by sustainable thinking

e.g. finding product reuse/recycle/repropose use cases

  • Understand the concept of “Life Cycle Analysis” (LCA)
  • Adopt the concept of the 'triple bottom line' to enhance a business case
  • Be able to mind-map the “system” in which the product is manufactured and used
Contributes 7 CPD hours

Key topics

  • Sustainable business by definition (including social and legislative pressures)
  • The triple bottom line
  • Moving from linear to circular product life cycles
  • Fundamentals of new project profitability – rethinking products, process related services
  • Systems moving to net-zero
  • Measuring a CO2E footprint for a product and its production system
  • Re-engineering approach with a 360 degree mind-set (where to focus resources)
  • Key project phases and targets involved in circular economy
  • Case study: BMW application to set sustainability targets

Once you have understood how to assess sustainability practices in your organisation, you will need to learn how to incorporate this into your projects. Sustainable product lifecycle design will help you to apply sustainable design considerations for projects, production and supply chains.
