Food and Drink Engineering Forum

The Food & Drink Engineering Forum  (FDEF) is one of the six technical committees which report to the IMechE Process Industries Division Board. 

It it a collaboration of the following professional bodies: Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Institute of Food Science and Technology, Institute of Brewing & Distilling and Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Directly employs up to 400,000 people, and as many as 1.2 million in ancillary services.

The Professional Mechanical Engineer in the Food Industry booklet has been compiled with contributions from the joint Food Engineering Committee of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Institute of Food Science and Technology, with narrative by Eur Ing John L Prosser. 

This document should be considered as an introduction to the Food Industry.

Objectives

  1. To provide the Institution’s focus for food engineering;
  2. To promote and support Institution members in their professional food-related activities;
  3. To promote awareness within the food industry of the benefits of professional engineering;
  4. To liaise with other food engineering organisations and appropriate food-related technical and scientific organisations on food engineering matters;
  5. To promote at all levels education and training including continuing professional development in food engineering and to influence its content;
  6. To promote excellence in food engineering; and
  7. To encourage adequately informed consideration of the food engineering aspects in matters of public, industrial and legislative interests.
