Young Members Board Chair, Peter Bonnington, updates on YMB activities so far this year and the Young Member of the Year Awards.

Peter BonningtonWe're now over half way through 2016 already, and this year continues to be a busy, and positive one for our Young Members.

In this year’s May AGM the YMB held elections for Chair-Elect and representatives to the Trustee Board, Technical Strategy Board and Regional Strategy Board. The Board elected Lydia Amarquaye as its Chair-Elect. Lydia and I will work closely together over the next year before she formally succeeds me as Chair in May 2017.  This replaces the previous role of Deputy Chair, but our current Deputy Chair, Marcus Nicholls, will stay on until the end of his term in 2017. In the other elections, Gavin Kerby was successfully re-elected as our Trustee Board Representative, and Ben Vallely was successfully elected as our representative to the Technical Strategy Board. On behalf of all Young Members, I'd like to thank all of those who stood in the elections, and offer my congratulations to Lydia, Gavin, and Ben. Some vacancies on the YMB itself remain, so if you are interested in volunteering with the Board, please do read on for further information

Our 2016 objectives are really starting to take shape: The Photographer of the Year competition is live; do check out the webpage for details on how to enter. The 2016 series of Global Engineering Debates are underway, and in this newsletter you can read more about the debate held in Trinidad & Tobago in June. July is a busy time for the Institution's education events, and you can read further about the 2016 Railway Challenge. Looking towards the end of the year, the plans for a TEDx event at One Birdcage Walk are progressing with great support from a group of active Young Members.

Finally, and by no means least, you can also read about how you can nominate outstanding Young Members for the Young Member of the Year Awards, complete with the details of our new categories for 2016. Every year we are amazed by the calibre of the entries, and we look forward to seeing what amazing things Young Members have been doing.

I'm also pleased to say that the YMB were invited to give a presentation to Council, a key part of the Governance Structure of the IMechE that guides and advises the Trustee Board. In the May AGM meeting, I spoke to Council, first providing an overview of the structure and purpose of the YMB, before then going on to provide an overview of the strategic direction of the Board with respect to both its programme of objectives and its governance. Our update was well received and has already promoted further discussion on how we can continue to integrate our activities, and input further in the strategic governance of the Institution.
