Our IMechE application workshop helps engineers take the next step towards Professional Registration by turning real career experience into strong, successful applications.

Our most recent session brought together engineers for practical guidance on achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status. We've designed the workshops to make the application process more accessible, and is part of a programme delivered by our IMechE Membership Development Team.

Why it matters to members

For many engineers, the challenge is not gaining the right experience, but explaining it. These workshops focus on impact. They help applicants clearly demonstrate how their work meets the five UK-SPEC competences, improving both application quality and confidence ahead of interview.

Sandra Mulligan, IMechE Senior Membership Development Manager, said:

“These workshops make a real difference. We help engineers recognise the value of their experience and present it with clarity and confidence.”

Support that goes beyond the workshop

Alongside group sessions, members can access one to one support and detailed application reviews. This combined approach ensures applicants are guided through each stage, from first draft to Professional Review Interview.

Workshops are delivered online and in person, and are free to attend for all applicants.

A growing programme

Application workshops continue to be one of IMechE’s most in demand member benefits. In the past year, almost 4,000 engineers attended a variety of online sessions, highlighting the need for clear, structured support.

We also deliver in-company additional sessions, tailored to specific organisational needs.

Member perspective

"For many years I had considered CEng registration with IMechE, but had never fully understood what that entailed, nor whether I was eligible. It was only after I engaged in a conversation with their Membership Development Manager, and with their guidance and support, that I felt confident to proceed with my application."

Throughout this process, I received help clarifying the application requirements, assisting me in matching my experience with the required competencies. They also provided me with the much needed motivation for my submission.

My registration has allowed me to reflect on my career experiences. It has strengthened my position as an engineer by providing an understanding of the skills that I'd brought to projects and teams throughout my career.

I believe my chartership demonstrates my commitment and competency as a engineer, builds trust with employers and connects me to a respected community of professionals.

I would recommend taking the registration path, start the conversation with the Membership Development Manager and invest in your professional future. You won’t regret it."

Lindsey McMurtrie, MEng CEng IMechE
