Francesca Cardilli is a Mechanical Engineer on the Placement Scheme at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP). Originally from Rome, Fran is currently studying at the University of Birmingham, completing her 12 month placement before returning to University for her final year.
How would you describe your experience on the Placement Scheme at Mercedes AMG HPP?
Since starting in September 2016, I've had the chance to test my abilities in a variety of departments. I have spent 6 months in Single Cylinder Development, where the team focus on investigating potential new combustion concepts, to find the next big performance gain. My second rotation is in Test Engineering, supporting dyno running.
During the build up to the 2017 season, I also had the opportunity to work with the Integration team, during the busiest time of the year. In such a fast paced environment, priorities and resources are constantly evolving and reshuffling, with Melbourne setting the pace (and the deadlines!). Dynamism and flexibility are key, together with the will to push yourself and learn from the best in the field.
What have you learnt so far during your time at Mercedes AMG HPP?
The scheme has given me the opportunity to measure myself with real engineering tasks from day one. Matching practical applications to the theory studied at university and gaining valuable engineering insight in a variety of aspects ranging from materials properties, to manufacturing techniques. I'm currently working on the design of next year's sensor box, integrating a number of new features in a tightly packaged envelope, to deliver a functional and reliable solution for a critical component in the communication between power unit and energy recovery system.
How has working at Mercedes AMG HPP lived up to your expectations?
It’s a real hive of ideas, where each team strives to find every last bit of performance, literally pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. When I applied for a job at HPP I was looking for a chance to challenge and better myself both as an individual and as an engineer. The string of stimulating projects I’ve been involved with, and the dedication and passion everyone shares for what we do made for the perfect match to my aspirations.
What advice would you give to this year’s FS Students?
Take a stroll round the pits during late garage shifts, talk to other teams, especially those who do things differently to you and try to understand the motives behind their design choices. One of my favourite aspects of the competition is how varied the ultimate products can be within the limits set by the regulations. Discussing ideas will enrich your baggage of engineering knowledge and maybe give you a few tips for the following year!
Once again, Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains are excited to be partners of this year's Formula Student event.
