Apprentice Automation Challenge

Waste reduction tackled by Leonardo SAL

Institution News Team

Team Leonardo SAL outline their entry for the 2022 Apprentice Automation Challenge.

The Problem

The problem our device solves is regarding waste consumption and to simplify an every day task.

Most UK households throw away at least 40kg of plastic each year, this is about 117 bottles per person per year.

We aim to make a product that reduces plastic waste whilst making a pre-existing process more convenient.

The Concept

Our concept was built with the idea of helping many different people complete their everyday tasks easier. For example, during the pandemic lots the older generation were stranded on their own with restricted help, so doing daily tasks such as making drinks could become a problem, as they get older and less able.

Our device will help these people by making it as simple as a button push to dispense drinks for their enjoyment. This device can be used in family household settings for liquids such as squash. For the adults this device can be used in party environments for everyone to get their own drinks from.

As well as benefiting the people, our concept also drives to reduce the plastic consumption from our customers.
