Institution news
To give something back to the profession and by passing my knowledge onto the next generation, I believe that I’m actually helping to make a difference in today’s world.
You may think ‘Oh I don't have time…’, ‘I have young children’ or a hundred other reasons, but the rewards are really worth it.
I have been volunteering for over 20 years now and have found that it doesn't necessarily take up a lot of time. It’s been quite easy to plan my time and commitments.
When I first decided to volunteer for the IMechE, little did I realise what I would receive from it. Volunteering not only benefits you in your wider professional life, knowing that you have helped others, you gain confidence in yourself and gain a great deal of personal satisfaction and ultimately, as a professional engineer, recognition and respect from other engineers.
Most members don’t always appreciate the how their Institution is run, hence they are not necessarily in a position to take full benefit of what’s on offer.
There are many volunteering opportunities to choose from ranging from; - Mentoring, Professional Review Interviewing, and various Management Committees. In these roles you are a representative of the IMechE. Over the years my contribution has included all of the above.
Being part of Committee work has been one of the most beneficial aspects of my volunteering role, giving me the opportunity to influence the changes necessary for us to remain a world leading Institution. The camaraderie amongst other volunteer members has been tremendous and I have found it a real tonic and pleasure to work with them and get to know them. Another added benefit is that I now have a group of peers that I can call on for advice and support, should I need it.
Specifically, being part of the recent UK-SPEC4 Working Group (which embedded the new standards), I have learnt a great deal about the way our Institution is run which has helped me understand the responsibilities we ALL carry as individuals.
So, if you are thinking of volunteering, I do strongly recommend it. Remember, it’s like everything in life: you get out what you put in.
There are currently a number of volunteering opportunities available within the membership area.
