Virtual cross-Region collaborations: one webinar at a time!

IMechE South East Asia Region (SEAR) working together to share ideas, skills and knowledge through their own webinar series.

The devastating spread of the COVID-19 pandemic across the globe has put a pause to the world, stopping all non-essential activities including learned society activities such as technical talks that are usually held by the local IMechE branches. To ensure all members in the region could continuously access quality technical talks, career and personal development opportunities, the South East Asia Region (SEAR) IMechE Webinar Series was launched in June 2020 with Malaysia Branch leading the first webinar.

The IMechE Webinar Series is championed by the SEAR Young Member Representative, Ir. Yaw Long Chua and Ms. Pooi Ying Choong, Secretary of the IMechE Malaysia Branch Young Member Section (YMS) with the assistance of Mr. Zen, SEAR IMechE Business Development Manager. It is also strongly supported by the SEAR Regional Chair, Prof. Ir. Dr. Vinesh Thiruchelvam.

After two months of careful planning, considerations, and arrangements, all done from the homes of respective IMechE volunteers involved as most countries were in lockdown or movement restriction order, the IMechE SEAR Webinar Series was realised. Topics covered in the webinar series ranging from innovations in engineering to artificial intelligence, all catering to a broad range of interest.

To date, the webinar series hosted speakers from Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore. The Webinar Series saw collaboration across the SEAR IMechE Branches, where webinars have speakers and support team from the YMS of different country branches working hand in hand remotely to ensure the webinars run smoothly.

The SEAR is proud to be paving way for region wide collaborations across country branches, fostering good relationship, support, and friendship across members in the region. On top of that, the SEAR IMechE series saw participation from IMechE members outside of SEAR. With members attending virtually all the way from Hong Kong Branch to India Branch, the series has reached out to countless members through their weekly webinars which offer different topic each week.

The SEAR IMechE Webinar team hopes to bring more quality technical talks for the benefit of all IMechE members across the globe, at the same time seek for collaborative opportunities with other IMechE regions.
