A new 5G test network in the UK will hold “end-to-end” trials of the ultrafast mobile internet early next year.

Experts from King’s College London and the Universities of Surrey and Bristol will send signals from mobile devices, such as a phone or a car, to a data centre and back again using the next generation connection. The university team aims to test 5G’s capability for application in a real-world environment, as the Government attempts to accelerate its roll-out in the UK.

The institutions will create three small-scale mobile networks and combine them to make a larger test network, including mobile signal receivers, transmitters and other technology to handle the signals.

The Government will award the project £16 million in an attempt to put the UK “at the head of the field” in 5G. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport said the sector could add up to £173 billion to the economy.

“This funding will support the pioneering research needed to ensure we can harness the potential of this technology to spark innovation, create new jobs and boost the economy,” said digital minister Matt Hancock.

Experts say 5G networks will be many times faster than available 4G signals. HD films will be downloaded in a matter of seconds and the high-speed data will enable more complex applications, like 3D virtual reality clips. New technologies such as autonomous vehicles, remote surgery, smart agriculture and advanced manufacturing will also benefit from the faster connections.

The new project is the first part of a four-year programme of Government investment and collaboration in 5G trials.

“This exciting programme builds on significant investment and a strong foundation of 5G research and development across the three institutions,” said project leader Rahim Tafazolli, director of the University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre. “The programme will maintain and extend the UK’s leadership position in the race to transform many aspects of everyday life and business through digital transformation.”
