Join the Thermal Power Committee!

Institution News Team

We are seeking volunteers to join the Thermal Power Committee (TPC). A sub-group of the Power Industries Division Board, the TPC is a group of engineers interested in all conventional power generation and thermal energy technologies.

This is a unique opportunity to volunteer your industry expertise to influence national policy, foster professional growth, and address the critical challenges across the modern energy landscape.

If you're interested please contact us at membernetworks@imeche.org

Why join us?

  • Influence policy: recommend policy and advise the UK Government and external organisations on the future of thermal power.
  • Drive technical excellence: help organise world-class conferences and webinars, such as the Steam Turbine and Generator User Group, to share cutting-edge knowledge.
  • Foster the next generation: play a key role in the training and development of young engineers entering the power sector.
  • Collaboration: work alongside the Nuclear and Renewable Power Committees to provide a balanced perspective on global energy security.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking experienced professionals with a deep understanding of:
  • Conventional and emerging systems: from small scale generation, to 1,000+MW utility stations, to industrial CHP applications.
  • Technical scope: expertise in design, operation, maintenance, life extension, and decommissioning of thermal assets.
  • Modern challenges: knowledge of carbon capture, energy from waste, and the integration of thermal power with renewable grids.
  • Leadership qualities: ability to engage with complex industry issues, influence peers, and contribute to IMechE’s strategic goals.
We are looking to attract new members to support the committee, preferably with a background in the following:
  • OEMs, EPC Contractors, Turnkey Suppliers of next-generation technology
  • Alternative Fuels or Alternative Thermal Cycles
  • CCS / CCUS, Trigeneration, CHP, Heat Networks, process heat recovery, and ORC

What is the commitment?

The committee typically meets three times a year (March, July, and November). Meetings are usually a mix of virtual sessions and one annual in-person meeting hosted at a regional industrial site.

If you’d like to join the TPC, CVs are accepted for membership and are considered and voted on throughout the year. We will normally also ask for a covering note explaining why you want to join, what you will bring and what initiatives related to thermal power you would be interested in leading on.
