The IMechE UK Eastern region were delighted to hold their first new members event since the pandemic at the Cambridge Museum of Technology on Saturday 13 November. Members were able to celebrate together their professional registration achievement.

Dr Jeremy Sage CEng Fellow stated ‘ It was a great opportunity to meet up with others involved in the Institution. It was fantastic to see the restored machinery in the museum and hear of its history’

This was echoed by John Sheppard Chair of the Region who said ‘I could see the pride on the faces of our new members, men and women, as they walked confidently forward to receive their certificates’ John who is a Trustee of the Museum organised the event along with the Jacqueline Brown from IMechE Business Development team.

As well as a tour of the Museum, the new members listened to an inspirational speech from Dame Mary Archer about her varied established career in science including her current role as the Chair of the Board of Trustees Science Museum Group. This was then followed by an equally elevating presentation by IMechE CEO Alice Bunn also about her extensive career in science and engineering. Alice drew  upon her time in senior positions in the space sector, explaining that dialogue and discussions were most successful on a global playing field and how this is one of her aspirations for the IMechE, that our relevance can only happen on an inclusive international level.

Alice Bunn CEO of the IMechE concluded

I was delighted to be able to support the event, I am convinced that as an Institution our skills and expertise are more relevant than ever to the challenges facing society today such as climate and sustainability, future transport, infectious disease control and education. Our new members and fellows will play a vital part in helping us all improve the world through engineering’.
