The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is delighted to announce the teams taking part in this year’s Apprentice Automation Challenge.

Taking place annually, the Challenge provides a unique opportunity for teams of talented apprentices to compete in an innovative design and manufacturing challenge to improve an everyday home or garden device.

By participating in a real-world engineering project, apprentices are able to develop their engineering, project management and teamworking skills in order to help them become well-rounded and highly capable engineers of the future.

Once more, this year’s teams are formed from companies in industry, colleges and engineering consultancies, including Manufacturing Technology Centre, Rolls Royce, Marchantcain, Perkins Engines, PetTech and University of Vocational Technology. Apprentices from Leonardo will also be returning to the Challenge and will be eager to repeat the successes of their colleagues Team Modus, who went on to win last year’s Challenge.

“The Challenge remains an important part of the Institution’s work to give apprentices the opportunity to develop themselves as they begin their engineering careers,“ said Toby Heagerty, Head Judge for the Challenge. “We are delighted to see so many teams take part in this year’s Challenge and are looking forward to seeing what kind of innovative projects they will submit,” he continued.

All teams will now go on to develop their idea into a working prototype, together with a detailed report including design specification, manufacturing instructions, user manual and a business case for the mass production. Both the prototypes and their reports will be judged at a live finals event later in 2021 and on behalf of the Institution we wish all the teams the very best with their work.

The Apprentice Automation Challenge is grateful for the support of its sponsors The Manufacturing Technology Centre and The Manufacturer.
