Apprentice Automation Challenge

Teams announced for Institution’s Apprentice Automation Challenge 2026

Apprentice Automation Challenge Team

This year’s challenge brings together a strong cohort of apprentice teams from across industry, each ready to demonstrate their skills in automation, problem-solving, and collaborative design.

Now in its 12th year and organised by the Institution's Manufacturing Industries Division’s Young Members Committee, the Apprentice Automation Challenge provides apprentices with the chance to compete in an innovative design and manufacturing competition to automate an everyday device, including a device specification, manufacturing instructions, manual and business case for their device's production and sale.

With devices ranging from commercial to industrial projects, including robots, healthcare assistants, plant feeders, security solutions and more, this year's competition reflects a broad range of disciplines and expertise, highlighting the diversity and strength of the UK's apprentice talent. With both competition veterans and previous winners Niftylift looking for award success this year, 2026 looks to our most exciting yet: view the full list.

“I'm delighted at the number of teams registered for this year's Apprentice Automation Challenge. This high level of interest reflects the continued importance of giving apprentices opportunities to develop their skills," said Joyce Achampong, the IMechE's Associate Director of Impact. "The Challenge continues to be a key part of Institution of Mechanical Engineers' efforts to inspire, develop, and showcase the next generation of engineering talent and reinforce the vital role our profession plays in shaping the future. On behalf of the IMechE I wish all teams the best this year!”

The teams' prototypes will be judged at the Finals in September at the Manufacturing Technology Centre, Coventry, where the Challenge Champions will be crowned and awarded a £2,000 prize, together with the opportunity to exhibit their work at the Smart Manufacturing Expo, organised by The Manufacturer.

On behalf of the organising committee and the IMechE, we wish all teams the best of luck in this year's competition.
