Ben received his prize from IMechE Kent Area Chair Dr Khosru Rahman on 19 July at the awards ceremony at the Royal School of Military Engineering, Chatham.
Ben had a double celebration – not only had he achieved the top marks on a demanding course while completing his BEng degree, but his second child was also born.
“I was really happy that not only had I managed to achieve all my academic work, but it also coincided with the birth of our first child at the beginning of the course and our second child just as I completed the course.”
He added: “I am very chuffed!”
The Clerk of Works course requires energy and dedication, and is “very competitive” according to Ben. Not only do the students complete a full BEng degree at the University of Greenwich, but they also achieve qualifications in project management and quantity surveying alongside the engineering modules. The final project brings all the streams of students together to work on a true-to-life scenario where they need to integrate their mechanical, electrical, construction skills to achieve a goal.
For such a high achieving engineer – what next? Ben has selected to work for a specialist team and will focus on power infrastructure. He says, “I chose this specialist team rather than a generalist role. They have been out on disaster recovery work in the Caribbean and in other parts of the world, and the next six months looks just as busy.
“It will be demanding, as I will have to increase my knowledge of power systems, but it will also make me one of only two mechanical experts within the team. As a subject matter expert, I may have the opportunity to step up and take decisions normally reserved for a higher rank.”
Ben also has his sights on becoming an Incorporated Engineer with IMechE.
We wish him every success.
