Our Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) two-part global final event and Award ceremony will be hosted virtually on 6 and 7 November 2020.
Now in its 55th year, the competition is for young engineers, designed to help develop verbal and visual communication in explaining technical mechanical engineering related subjects.
Our original plan to host this year’s SOFE Global Final in Abu Dhabi earlier this year, was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restrictions on travel, social gatherings and human interaction. We must ensure the safety of our competitors, IMechE members, volunteers and employers.
However, in recognition of the work of the competitors and to ensure an overall winner is crowned for the first time since its inception, the Global Final will be hosted on a virtual platform.
The two-part final will bring together the 2019 champions from the eight regions - Americas, Europe, South East Asia, North East Asia, Middle East & Africa, Southern Asia, Oceania, UK and Ireland - to battle it out one last time to see who will be crowned the 2019 overall SOFE winner. In the first stage, a 20-minute pre-recorded video presentation from each of the finalists will be streamed live. Following this, each competitor will participate in a 10-minute live interactive Q&A session; 90% of the total marks will be awarded for presentation skills and 10% for technical content.
On Day 2, after a short break for judges’ deliberations, there will be an awards ceremony, conducted by IMechE President, Terry Spall. Prizes, funded by the Institution’s Trustee Board Awards Committee, will be awarded to the winner and runner up. First prize will be £300 and second prize £200.
