Institution news
The IMechE Southern Asia Region recently concluded the institution’s first ever video competition. The competition was open to all members of the institution. The theme for this competition was the current IMechE President Jon Hilton’s Presidential message: “Engineering your own future”. After the success of the India Branch and Southern Asia Region photograph competition, this was an natural progression for the type of event. From depicting an idea as a still image to explaining it in two minutes, not sure which is more challenging! The idea behind the competition was to challenge our members to communicate their plan for future in just two minutes. This would not only make them think in more detail about their future, but also help develop their communication skills.

After detailed judging process and a close finish, Farrukh Aqil an affiliate member from Pakistan was adjudged as the winner of the inaugural SAR video competition. The Southern Asia Chairman, Sam Perera commented: "The Institution's first video competition for members demonstrates the commitment of the Institution and the Southern Asia region towards developing a diverse skill set among our engineers. Such competitions help engineers develop and understand the importance of developing soft skills to be a successful engineer. I was impressed by the quality and content of the videos, more so by the diverse nature of the talks. I congratulate the winners for their entries and the organizers, especially Siddartha, for yet another first for the region and international."
