Soundbites - December 2017

PE

Christmas will soon be upon us. So we’d like to know what gift – apart from the obvious ones like world peace, unlimited wealth or the secret of eternal youth – you hope to receive. And which do you think will be the discerning engineer’s “must-have” gift this year?

A Tesla Model S electric vehicle and a Tesla 10kW Powerwall for excess power storage from the solar panels will do nicely.

Mark Bragg, Aberdeen

A Raspberry Pi, Pic micro or Arduino kit would be nice. As the world becomes more computer-based, as engineers we need to adapt and be part of the Internet of Things.

Amarjit Singh, London

A jet pack! And a sonic screwdriver.

Ian Jenkins, Lichfield, Staffordshire

Car parts and time with my son to work on our classic car.

Damian Richmond, Newtown, Powys

I always struggle to think of something I would like. That said, a Galaxy S7 phone would be nice but it’s not really necessary.

Geoff Donkin, Beverley, East Yorkshire

I would love a snow-blower for my first winter in Canada. Maybe even a ride-on tractor with the snow-blower attachment! A pancake printer would be the cool Geek present but I would have more chance of getting the Death Star waffle maker.

Barry Swan, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Therapy, to stop me keeping all sorts of rubbish just in case it comes in handy.

James Turner, Surrey

I’d like a Higher Apprenticeship for my son, 18, who is dyslexic but has The Knack.

Keith Thomas, Derby

I spend too much time at a desk or in meetings and getting my hands dirty is largely reserved for hobbies. So tools for home renovation and maintaining cars and bikes figure high on my list.

Mark Ayshford, Indianapolis, Indiana

A thermal-imaging camera. It is like a pair of eyes into a new world. Great to detect all manner of problems that are not evident to “standard eyes”. Good cameras with edge-enhanced images cost less than £600.

Joachim Neff, Dundee

Friendship and empathy, and for the discerning engineer’s gift rationality and integrity.

Brian Edmonds, Farnham, Surrey

I’d like to have the ability to make the press report at least one positive story for every negative one. The must-have gift for every engineer is a pint glass with a membrane across the middle – that way our glasses will always be half-full. Happy Christmas!

Gary Lock, Dorking, Surrey

To restart 2016 with the hope that it doesn’t end up so crazily. The discerning engineer must-have will be a Brexit satnav.

Geoff Buck, Devon, Europe

A sensible train service. If I want to get to London earlier I will take an earlier train, rather than spend £52 billion. And sensibly priced power supply that does not include unproven designs for nuclear power stations, the only examples of which are up to nine years behind schedule.

John Downes, Caldy, Wirral

For the UK and the US to tackle divisive social issues head on and for the press to go back to truth reporting as opposed to “post-truth”. Maybe engineers should get a simple voice-to-text device and configure it to automatically send their concerns to local media and governments.

Lynn Harvey, Massachusetts

An ideal gift would be an app showing the percentage of qualified engineers in civil service departments and government committees directly involved with decision making on technical matters such as defence, energy, transport and education. Must-have gift would be a safety helmet, with ear mufflers.

George Evans, Ashford, Kent

Our family and friends have all agreed not to send each other gifts. Not a question of being miserly. We do not believe in today’s “must have” society. We would only buy an essential need.

Keith Herber, Norfolk

The ability to show politicians that, whilst Brexit means Brexit, we engineers can work the issue through in a calm manner by a process-led procedure.

Colin Sanderson, Stonehaven

It’s a very faint hope but a decision not to enact article 50 would be a great present.

Roger Taplin, Witney, Oxfordshire

I would like dual nationality with another EU country (just in case!). All discerning engineers will want a crystal ball.

Jeff Bulled, Lidlington, Bedfordshire

My chosen gift is a peaceful Christmas Day surrounded by my family – nothing could be better.

Richard Young, Manchester
