Congratulations to Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton on his appointment as Chief of the Defence Staff, marking the first time an engineer has led the UK’s Armed Forces.
A Fellow of the Institution, Sir Rich brings a powerful combination of technical expertise and leadership to this historic role. Having served as RAF Chief since June 2023, he now takes on the task of leading major reforms following the Strategic Defence Review. A proud moment for the engineering profession and the Armed Forces alike. President Matt Garside said:
We would like to warmly congratulate Air Chief Marshall Sir Rich Knighton on his appointment as Chief of the Defence Staff. This landmark moment marks the first time a professionally qualified engineer and non-combat officer will lead the UK’s armed forces — testament to the critical role engineering expertise now plays in shaping national defence strategy. In an era where technological advances are changing how war is fought, and countries defend themselves; Sir Rich’s engineering skills and experience make him well-placed to lead the implementation of the recently published Strategic Defence Review. The Institution takes pride in Sir Richard’s achievements and the role of engineers in defending peace and stability for the benefit of wider society. We are confident that his appointment will inspire a new generation of engineers to see their skills as central to national and global challenges.
