India Branch AGM

A two-day event, combining the Southern Asia Region's Speak out for Engineering Final 2019, and the India Branch AGM, was held on 9 -10 November 2019, at the Vedic Village, Kolkata.

On first day, after SAR SOFE Final, joint dinner was arranged. The SAR SOFE Final results were declared. Special monetary awards were declared by the Regional Chair, for the winner, runner-up and 1 st runner-up.

Sri Lanka Dinner

Southern Asia Regional Chair visited Sri Lanka on 22 November 2019 to attend the Annual Dinner, normally a very colourful affair, held at Hotel Galadari, Colombo. He handed over the award and memento to Mr. Ahsan Wanasinghe, the runner-up of SAR SOFE Final, 2019.

Dhaka Group, SAR, Event

Dhaka Group organised “CEng and IMechE Membership and its importance in Professional Development for Engineers ”, a special seminar, followed by round table discussions. 

Southern Asia Regional Chair was invited as a guest of honour. During his presentation, he handed over the SAR SOFE Final award, along with a photograph with contestants, judges and the Chair to Fahim Islam Anik, from Bangladesh. 

A member of RMIT from Melbourne, Australia, also a guest of honour, made a very useful presentation on ‘Career Development’. The Regional Chair spoke the usefulness of IMechE association, citing his journey with IMechE as a Student Member in 1960s and his five-year apprenticeship with Jessop & Co. Ltd., Kolkata, India from 1952; highlighting the benefits of his apprenticeship and practical association with engineering for career development.

India and IMechE - a joint symposium is planned

A dialogue was initiated for a joint symposium  between the Institution of Engineers (India) [IEI], Kolkata, and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (UK), for which efforts were first initiated more than a decade ago. Joanna Horton, Baristo and others from IMechE HQ were parties in interactive sessions with the Institution, at their HQ in Kolkata. 

A five member team from IEI visited the registered office of IMechE on 7 December 2019.  The issue of joint symposium will be held on 31January, 2020. The joint symposium with IEI will be a big event; it will include the seminar, "Alternative Means of Clean and Green Mechanised Urban Transportation – Present Challenges and Future Horizons",  a very important global societal issue.
