Remote Controlled Mine-Seeking Boats are a Model of Consistency

Model making and prototyping company, Ogle Models and Prototypes has successfully completed a meticulous project to produce accurate replicas of remote controlled boats used by the Royal Navy to detect and detonate underwater mines.

Ogle, based in Letchworth, was tasked with recreating the very latest in subsea technology to help showcase the product to potential buyers around the world. The models were commissioned by Atlas Elektronik UK Ltd, a leading provider of science and technology solutions to the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Navy and a host of international defence organisations. Their latest product for countering the threat from naval mines is the ARCIMS, which recognises the presence of mines and is capable of destroying them, removing the need to have personnel in the area. Ogle was given responsibility of building two accurate scale models of the equipment, one 40cm long and one 1m long, for use at exhibitions around the world.

Marketing and Sales Director, Dave Bennion says “We started by using the CAD drawings for the full-sized boat and resizing the drawings to create accurate and detailed plans for the two models. The same processes were used to create both models. The hulls were CNC machined from model board. The cabin sections were created from SLA printed parts.

Machined acrylic glazing panels complete with frames made up the windows which were then bonded into place. The main mast, engines and interior details were again formed using SLA. On the larger model the UUV mounting rig was hand made from Perspex and aluminium. The towed arrays themselves were turned on a machine lathe from solid resin bar. They also had additional details added including propellers, towing eyes and stabilisers.”

The ARCIMS models will now be used by Atlas Elektroniks and their team at exhibitions around the world.
