Power Lecture Series: Steam turbines and overhaul management

A seminar on steam turbine and overhaul management, the second event of the Power Lecture Series organised by IMechE Pakistan, was held recently at the Main Auditorium in DHA Suffa University at Karachi (Pakistan). Uzair Jamil, HubCo reports.

The Power Lecture series of seminars is important because it aims to bridge the gap between industry and academia, which has remained one of the greatest aims of IMechE Pakistan group. The main objective is to provide insight to the academia and students about the challenges posed in industries as well as to engage professionals from reputed organisations to share their valuable industrial experiences.

Attended by around 40 IMechE members and 60 non-members, this seminar was an in-depth lecture on steam turbines and their overhaul management by Mr. Muhammad Azhar Jamil Khan,. Muhammad is a project manager at the HubCo Power Station Plant (Pakistan) with more than 18 years of industrial experience.

The event commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a few introductory remarks by Registrar DSU Brig (R) Syed Muhammad Rafique Ahmad, who congratulated IMechE Pakistan for arranging such an enlightened event. Next, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Tufail, Chairman IMechE Pakistan, appreciated IMechE DSU and Hub Power Company for bringing together academia and industry professionals on a common platform. He explained how the Power Lecture Series holds immense importance for young engineers.

The keynote speaker of the day, Mr. Azhar Jamil, gave his presentation on steam turbine overhaul management. After a brief overview of the Hub Power Station, he began by describing how steam turbines operate, covering the two main types of steam turbines, impulse and reaction turbines. Describing the intricacies of steam turbine, he explained about the various mechanical components involved. In the second part of the presentation, Mr. Azhar Jamil defined overhaul management, and its significance. He described different types and frequencies of outages, explaining the range of activities performed during an outage. Subsequently, he explained the various assessment measures taken to identify and resolve issues and defects during an outage. Lastly, he touched upon the final checks performed before the machine is declared commercially available. He followed his presentation by taking questions..

After the Q&A session, Dr. Mohammed Uneeb, Vice-Chair IMechE Pakistan was invited on the stage to share his thoughts and deliver concluding remarks. He began by praising the keynote speaker of the day for covering such an extensive topic in a limited time. He praised the commitment of professionals from power industry for promoting experience-based learning in the field of engineering and further expressed his desire for more events like this in the future.

In the end, key note speaker Mr. Azhar Jamil, Dr. Tufail and Dr. Uneeb were given memorabilia shields as a token of appreciation. The event concluded with a memorable group photograph of the chief guests, HUBCO professionals, and DSU faculty members.
