Lance Corporal Edem Siawor received the award for Top Class One student of the year 2017 on 13 March 2018. Institution of Mechanical Engineers Chief Executive Colin Brown presented him with a certificate and cheque for £250 at the Institution headquarters in London.

After seven years in the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers), Edem is now an experienced supervisor posted to the MOD base at Dhekelia in Cyprus.

He explained: “I joined the army at the age of 30 after a career in finance and accounting in West Africa. I was visiting the UK when I went into the army careers office looking for something challenging. As I was good at maths and science, the recruiters suggested becoming a Vehicle Mechanic in the REME.”

Edem has never looked back since. He now works on a range of different vehicles diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults, inspecting the work of craftsmen and providing quality assurance. The promotion to Class One has been a big step up, he says. “I like change and enjoy something new.”

Edem scored an average of 97% during his Class One course and achieved the highest mark of all Class One students for the year.

“I want to say a massive thank you to the CEO of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Dr Colin Brown, for this award. I know a lot of people go through MOD Lyneham for their Class One course and to be selected as the top student for the year is a great honour and gives me a great sense of accomplishment.”

Edem was accompanied by WO2 AQMS Nathan Biscombe and Sgt Luke Outterson, both also based in Cyprus.

Nathan said: “I am immensely proud of LCpl Siawor’s achievement. It is nothing short of what he deserves, we see this high standard of performance and achievement daily. Congratulations on the effort displayed throughout your Class One course which has won you this award.”

Edem is applying for EngTech registration with the Institution.
