On the 23 October a delegation from the Oman Society of Engineers (OSE) were hosted at One Birdcage Walk by the President Tony Roche.

The delegation from OSE attended the Global Engineering Congress held in London in the morning, before visiting the Institution to sign an Agreement of Cooperation, AoC. Eng. Khamis Al-Souli, Chairman of the OSE signed the AoC, alongside Dr Amr Elbanhawy, IMechE Middle East and Africa Regional Chair.

The purpose of the agreement is develop friendly co-operative relations between the two societies, to support the engineering community in Oman. The agreement will provide encouragement for engineers to achieve globally recognised professional registration and to promote the exchange of technical information to advance mechanical engineering.

Sreejith Kesavan, IMechE Oman Country Representative said,

“OSE was established in 2001 through an Omani Ministerial Decision to represent the engineering fraternity in Oman with a mission to pursue professional development of engineers in Oman. IMechE started engaging with OSE in 2016 when the basic framework of cooperation was established and now formalised through the signing of an AoC.

Our formal association with OSE is in line with our objective of collaborating with like-minded organisations for promoting engineering in public space and contributing to the professional development of the engineering society at large. A lot of hard work has gone into materialising this and I would like to thank my colleagues at OSE under the leadership of Chairman Dr Khamis Al Souli and Dr Sadiq Al Muscati, Chairman of OPEN - another organisation with which we have established collaboration agreement recently.

Oman has become a major focus for IMechE since the government has kick started one of the region’s biggest national skill up gradation missions for its citizens where we are well positioned to support it by providing the right qualifications, tools, knowledge and training.”

Amr Elbanhawy, IMechE Middle East and Africa Regional Chair said,

“Oman is witnessing a great leap into more industrialisation than ever before. This means a rising demand for capable and modern engineers. I am very proud to see the IMechE working together with OSE supporting local engineers, and raising the profile of the profession. This is in the heart of the regional agenda, and I am thankful to my colleagues in IMechE and OSE who agreed and concluded this achievement.”

Dr Sadiq Muscati, Oman Professional Engineers Network (OPEN) said,

"OPEN was launched formally at the British Embassy Muscat in February. It is a subsidiary of OSE operating in collaboration with IMechE and IET. It is also supported by ICE, IChemE, IStructE, RTPI, RIBA and RICS. OPEN’s main objective is to support young professionals in Oman and encourage their professional development and to assist them in acquiring internationally recognised professional qualifications. The AoC will certainly boost and strengthen the collaboration with IMechE for achieving OPEN’s objectives. OPEN is run by a steering committee of 14 members, made up of a diverse range of academics and practising professionals.
