IMechE and NPL are championing the importance of accurate measurement as a cornerstone of engineering excellence and innovation. The two organizations previously published a Good Practice Guide titled “Beginner’s Guide to Measurement in Mechanical Engineering” in 2013, which remains relevant and widely used today. By promoting awareness of best practices in metrology and the need for robust training, IMechE and NPL aim to equip engineers with the necessary tools and knowledge to address the challenges posed by emerging technologies.

NPL Head of Engineering, Dr Rob Smith, said: “Measurement underpins much of our way of life and informs on decisions that can have impact on many aspects of our society. IMechE President Clive Hickman OBE said: “Accurate measurement is critical to good engineering: If you can’t measure it you can’t make it! The UK is a leader in this area and should continue to invest in training the next generation of engineers and technicians in the sector.
To deliver on our industrial strategy will require the expertise and leadership of our national laboratories, who underpin the science and engineering base of the UK.”
