New Report Highlights the Importance of Measurement in Engineering

A new report launched today by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) emphasises the critical role of measurement in engineering.

As engineers drive innovation and commercialize new technologies, their expertise in measurement technologies is essential for ensuring precision and reliability across various industries.

The report outlines that better measurement leads to better outcomes, ensuring safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Selecting appropriate measurement tools and establishing robust protocols for their maintenance and performance management are crucial steps in mitigating the risks associated with inaccurate data.

Investment in training and education is vital to maintain these standards. Engineers must possess a diverse skill set that includes not only technical knowledge but also an understanding of metrology’s broader implications. Comprehensive training programs are necessary to help professionals navigate the challenges posed by emerging technologies, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of measurements in ever-evolving engineering contexts.

IMechE and NPL are championing the importance of accurate measurement as a cornerstone of engineering excellence and innovation. The two organizations previously published a Good Practice Guide titled “Beginner’s Guide to Measurement in Mechanical Engineering” in 2013, which remains relevant and widely used today. By promoting awareness of best practices in metrology and the need for robust training, IMechE and NPL aim to equip engineers with the necessary tools and knowledge to address the challenges posed by emerging technologies.

Investing in better measurement strengthens entire industries. By refining measurement techniques, engineers contribute to higher productivity, enhanced sustainability, and the seamless integration of emerging technologies.

NPL Head of Engineering, Dr Rob Smith, said: “Measurement underpins much of our way of life and informs on decisions that can have impact on many aspects of our society. By successfully combining scientific and engineering approaches and capabilities, organisations like NPL can maximise the potential benefits from all aspects of accurate measurement. A trained and skilled workforce underpins any such strategy which makes the work of professional associations like the IMechE vital to our success.”

IMechE President Clive Hickman OBE said: “Accurate measurement is critical to good engineering: If you can’t measure it you can’t make it! The UK is a leader in this area and should continue to invest in training the next generation of engineers and technicians in the sector.

To deliver on our industrial strategy will require the expertise and leadership of our national laboratories, who underpin the science and engineering base of the UK.”
