John Butler, Midland Region
Members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers were joined by representatives from Midland companies and academia to attend the Midland Engineering Dinner (MED2023) earlier this month.
Over 130 guests attended the gala dinner which was held at the four-star Burlington Hotel in the centre of Birmingham.
Following a welcome drinks reception, the President of the Institution, Giles Harthill, gave an introductory talk prior to the guests enjoying an excellent three-course dinner.
The event gave the opportunity to present an award to George Campbell-Ferguson as the winner of the Climate Change competition. This competition was organised by the Midland Region of the Institution together with Professor Reza Ziarati of C4FF. It was open to any school pupil and had a prize of £250 for both the winning individual and their school.
We were highly entertained by the after-dinner speaker, Dave Heeley. He gave us an interesting, and often humorous, insight into his long history of fundraising by his exceptional exploits. These included completing 7 marathons in 7 days in 7 continents and undertaking 10 marathons in 10 days whilst also cycling between events.
Our own fundraising on the evening was on behalf of the Birmingham Children's Hospital and the IMechE Support Network which together raised well over £500."
