IMechE vote results announced

Members cast their votes on key changes shaping IMechE’s future direction.

IMechE members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of updates to the Institution’s By-laws and Trustee Board Regulations, confirming strong support for a more modern, agile and inclusive organisation.

These changes strengthen how the Trustee Board, Council, Executive, and associated boards and committees collectively decide and deliver the Institution’s strategy and plans. They enable quicker, better-informed decisions, clearer accountability and more opportunities for members to get involved in shaping the Institution’s future.

A vote for progress - why it matters

Engineers rely on IMechE to champion the profession, set standards and deliver impact through innovation. After years of grappling with internal challenges, these changes will help deliver value to members and respond to the rapid developments we see across engineering.

Updating these By-laws is a first step in implementing a new operating model that harnesses the collective skills and experience of the membership. These improvements will help IMechE serve members and society more effectively.

The results

Voting closed at 12:00 BST on Monday 13 October 2025. 2,927 votes were cast from a total eligible (corporate and associate members) of 61,955 (4.72%).

  • Abstain: 201

Motion 2: To implement changes for greater operational efficiency

The clear outcome shows members’ confidence in changes to our operating model and the improvements to come.

What happens next

Subject to final approval by the Engineering Council and Privy Council, these changes will clarify leadership roles, streamline processes and open a more accessible route to Deputy President. This will strengthen IMechE’s ability to deliver its purpose and strategy.

The changes are a small step towards a broader plan for new ways of working that extends to May 2026.
