IMechE President Terry Spall congratulates this year's IMechE Scholars from Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College on their academic achievements.

IMechE President Terry Spall joined Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College Scholars online on 13 November, to congratulate the twelve upper sixth Scholars at Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College on their exceptional academic achievements.

The twelve IMechE Scholars are selected from the top-performing students at Welbeck; all have achieved four As at AS Level with high scores in maths and physics. This year’s winners of the IMechE award represent the last intake at Welbeck DSFC, as the college prepares to close.

The awards, funded by IMechE’s Educational Awards Committee, have recognised over 40 top achievers since 2017, who have gone on to study engineering or science at university. Most Welbeck students have been funded by the Ministry of Defence as part of the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS) which prepares young people for a career as engineering officers.

During the virtual awards celebration, the Scholars chatted with the President speaking about their time at Welbeck, what they planned to study at university and their hopes for their future career.

IMechE President Terry Spall said,

“It was really great to meet such an impressive group of young engineers, already top achievers and with their sights now firmly set on the UK’s top universities.  It was even more pleasing to see that five of the twelve were female.  Their achievements are a fine testament to Welbeck College.  I would like to congratulate all the scholars on their achievements and wish them well in their undergraduate studies.  I would also like to commend the Welbeck team for delivering to such a high standard”.

Lt Col Tim Hayday, Vice Principal (Academic) at Welbeck DSFC said,

“The Year 13 IMechE Scholars for 2020/21 are:

  • Amtul Azeem
  • Lauren Bearman
  • Ella Chapman
  • James Clarke-Kellaway
  • Lois Harwood
  • Jonathan Lawson
  • Alec Mathison
  • Annan McGlade
  • Ethan Pantling
  • Leon Foster-Pollard
  • Nathan Ramsay
  • Sarah Rigg.

"They all received a certificate and voucher. All scholars will receive permanent trophies later in the academic year and the top performing Scholar will also be presented with the IMechE trophy in the summer of 2021 during the College’s annual prize-giving and passing out parade. Also joined in the picture is Tabitha Samouelle, Welbeck’s Deputy Head of College (Academic).”

He continued,

“These are the finest 12 STEM scholars Welbeck DSFC has to offer, all having received AAAA at AS level and high GCSE score. Hoping to achieve A*A*A* at A level next year, with applications currently to the top universities to study engineering-based degrees as part of the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS). All are destined to become officers in HM Armed Forces in one of either the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force or as a civil servant in the Defence Equipment & Support Group.”
