Effective 1 October 2025, Jo Passingham has been appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IMechE.

Jo brings extensive leadership experience within the Institution and a deep understanding of its mission and strategic goals. She says:

“I’m both excited and mindful of the responsibility this role brings. My focus will be on continuing the momentum Alice has created, while also looking ahead to new opportunities to make our Institution even stronger and more relevant to the world of engineering.”

Three strategic priorities

Jo outlined three strategic priorities that will guide the Institution’s work in the coming months:

  • Strong financial foundations – ensuring IMechE can invest confidently in its future. Decisive action is being taken in 2025 to restore balance, streamline financial structures, and focus on efficiency and effectiveness. The recent pension buy-in marks another important step toward long-term stability.

  • A healthy and inclusive culture – building collaboration and trust as the bedrock of performance and reputation. The refreshed Diversity & Inclusion Strategy is being embedded into the Institution’s wider plans, alongside a Culture Review to provide an independent perspective on strengths and areas for improvement.

  • A willingness to embrace change – evolving the Institution’s operating model to challenge established ways of working and deliver greater impact in a rapidly changing world.

Our headquarters

Back in February, our members voted in favour of a resolution regarding the future of our headquarters building in central London. Together with our members, volunteers and staff, Jo is pleased to see the project moving forward. She encourages members to check My Account for updates and stay tuned for further announcements.

Passing the baton

“This is a moment of continuity and renewal,” Jo added. “Passing the baton doesn’t mean starting over - it means building on what works, learning from what we’ve achieved, and moving forward together. I’m looking forward to working with our members, partners, and wider community as we continue our shared mission to improve the world through engineering.”

Dr Alice Bunn OBE stepped down as Chief Executive at the end of September 2025, after leading the Institution with vision, energy, and commitment since July 2021.

During her tenure, Dr Bunn strengthened the Institution’s strategy, enhanced its financial stability, and elevated its external profile. She has been a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion, helping to ensure that IMechE and the wider engineering community continue to welcome and nurture talent from all backgrounds. Her contributions have left a lasting legacy that will continue to shape the Institution’s direction for years to come.
