We are losing one of our most well-known colleagues this month when Joan Gibbins, Deputy Council Officer, retires after working nearly 50 years at IMechE.

Joan joined the Institution in 1973 and in 2011 she received an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for her support of the engineering profession.

Joan is well known and respected by members around the world for her exceptional work and loyal service to IMechE, which has seen many changes since she began work here.

Several years ago, she was made a Companion of the Institution to reflect the very high esteem in which she is held by all in IMechE.

President Phil Peel said:

“It would not be possible to count the number of people who have been guided, supported and nurtured by her over the years I wish Joan a well-earned rest and all the best in her retirement. Her cheerful manner and desire to help everyone will certainly be sorely missed. Joan, thank you from all of us in the Institution.”

Joan’s principal roles for the Institution have included supporting the Trustee Board, Council and associated committees, and co-ordinating all the arrangements for the annual elections to the Trustee Board and Council.
