A new Institution student chapter welcomes 200 members at the University of Khartoum.
The chapter was officially launched by Dr Mudawi Ibrahim Adam CEng FIMechE, student liaison officer, who talked further about the Institution and the benefits of association and membership. The launch event was widely attended by students, academics and other guests, including Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr Ali Abdulrahman Rabah, Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Dr Abdu Daoud Suleiman and Mr Michael Aron, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Sudan. The ambassador commented that he was proud of the place that women take in engineering in the country and specifically at the University of Khartoum (UofK). The trend to increase international student affiliate membership of the Institution continues – through the development of university-based chapters – with a number of established groups in India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, North America and the West Indies among other countries and regions. Abdalla Mohd Osman Hamid, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student, was one of the organisers of the UofK student chapter launch event. He confirmed that applications for volunteering and Institution registration were at about 200, with a further meeting planned to facilitate registration of more student affiliate members. He said: “We are very proud of being among the people who will change the future of mechanical engineering in our country by creating our own professional community and linking it with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, an international institution with great status. “There are many advantages the Institution will give to students here, such as support through their academic phases, choosing their sector, resources for research, reports and projects and of course with events and networking opportunities.” The formalities were opened with a welcome from the chapter’s secretary, Amro El Amin. Dr Azza Al-teraify, from the IEEE Sudan branch, congratulated UofK students for taking Institution membership. She confirmed that she was willing to offer help and partnership in the future between the IEEE and Institution groups. The programme was concluded with a number of presentations and lectures by professional engineers and students, on engineering practice and research projects.
The Institution publishes a guide to Student Chapter and Affiliate Recruitment on its website. For further information and support email international@imeche.org.
