Institution News Team
The Institution is proud to sponsor the first Tomorrow’s Engineers Week Big Assembly, offering schools across the UK the chance to simultaneously take part in the same assembly on engineering careers.
Taking place at 10.30am 7 November 2018, there will be a live video stream of the Assembly, which will be held at the Cedars Academy in Birstall, near Leicester, to hundreds of schools across the UK. Over 40,000 students are expected to join the Assembly via the video link. Anneka Kang, a Young Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, will join a panel of inspiring engineers who will discuss their careers and the positive impact engineering has on the issues young people care about most. Anneka’s area of expertise is clean energy. She is currently doing a PhD at the UCL Energy Institute investigating the impact of hybrid solar photovoltaic- thermal panels and storage on reducing domestic heating emissions. Prior to this, she worked as an energy consultant in the fast consumer goods production industry, helping factories around the world use less energy. She has also worked as a mechanical design engineer developing clean energy storage solutions for the construction sector. Explaining her decision to join the panel, Anneka said: “When I was about 13 I learnt about global warming in a school science lesson, at this point I was inspired to pursue a career where I could help to provide sustainability for future generations to come. A few years later I decided I wanted to be an engineer as I felt attracted to this discipline, due to my practical nature and aspiration to see something I contributed to being used to help tackle climate change. As a researcher, I am aspiring to make a valuable contribution to the energy research community with my work on clean heating solutions. I find it a very exciting time to be in this field as we make a huge transition to reduce the UK’s emissions by 80% relative to 1990 levels by 2050.” Other sponsors of the Big Assembly include ICE and IET. Tomorrow’s Engineers Week takes place from 5-9 November 2018 and aims to change perceptions of engineering among young people, their parents and teachers and to inspire future engineers. Tomorrow’s Engineers is the November campaign focus for Year of Engineering, a year-long government campaign, which celebrates the world and wonder of engineering.
