The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has brought together a working group of eight expert partners to respond to the OLEV consultation on ending the sale of diesel, petrol and hybrid vans and cars.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ expert partners are:

  • Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership
  • Brunel University
  • Bath University
  • University College London
  • Brighton University
  • Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport
  • Motorsport Industry Association.

This group has undertaken new research and formulated an evidenced-based response that agrees in principle with the phase-out date of 2035 for the sale of pure petrol and pure diesel vehicles but does not support the banning of all hybrid vehicles.

Recommendations

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers and its expert partners strongly advise the government to adopt the dual approach presented in this technical consultation response - electric vehicles and plug in hybrids using sustainable fuel.
