Esther Barratt MBE, Chair of the IMechE Nuclear Power Committee, has been recognised in the King's Birthday Honours List for services to nuclear power engineering.

Esther is a Group Director at Amentum, where she leads more than 600 engineers, scientists and technical specialists supporting clients across the UK nuclear sector. Throughout her career, she has played a key role in strengthening technical capability, supporting safe and reliable electricity generation, and helping to shape the future of nuclear energy.

Reflecting on the honour

Reflecting on the award, Esther said:

"I am genuinely surprised and delighted to receive this honour. It has made me reflect on just how many people have supported, challenged and inspired me throughout my career and on the importance of paying that forward.

I am particularly grateful to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for playing a critical role in my professional development and giving me opportunities to amplify my contribution to the wider engineering community."

Supporting the engineering profession

Alongside her industry leadership, Esther makes a significant contribution to the engineering profession through her volunteer work with the Institution and as a representative on the Royal Academy of Engineering's Clean Power Advisory Working Group. As Chair of the IMechE Nuclear Power Committee, she helps to shape technical discussions and deliver events and initiatives that support engineers across the nuclear sector.

Supporting the next generation of nuclear engineering

Esther is also supporting the delivery of several major IMechE nuclear events taking place this autumn. Advanced Nuclear Reactor Design 2026 will explore how engineers are developing the next generation of reactors, bringing together technical updates, regulatory perspectives and insights into government support for the sector.

She is also supporting Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) 2026 and Nuclear Lifting 2026, helping to bring together experts from across the industry to share knowledge, best practice and lessons learned.

Congratulations from the Institution

We congratulate Esther on this well-deserved recognition and thank her for her continued contribution to engineering, the nuclear industry and the Institution.
