IMechE Strategy Committee – Ordinary Member

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is a charity and provides life-long learning opportunities for our 115,000 members, many of whom will achieve professionally registered status. IMechE aims to promote the huge contribution that mechanical engineers make to society at large.

The Strategy Committee, as the name implies, is the hub of the IMechE’s strategic planning. It will reach into every part of the Institution and importantly reach out to, and be informed by, the needs of engineers and technicians, their employers and the major challenges facing society.

The IMechE Strategy 2030 has been launched and you will be involved in discussions around its delivery going forward.

The committee is vital to ensuring that our Institution builds on its stated purpose. StratCom will shape the short, medium and long-term strategy of the Institution and provide clarity of what is expected for all involved in running or supporting the IMechE.

We are seeking two committee members who have the following skills:

  • A demonstrable ability to operate and contribute at Committee level.
  • Experience of high-level strategy implementation.
  • A proven understanding of IT and digital implementation.
  • An ability to engage with difficult and complex challenges
  • The ability to influence others
  • Be analytical and able to communicate concisely
  • Be aware of the challenges facing engineering and engineering communities
  • Be able to take a broad perspective of the Institution and beyond
  • Value realisation (how do we go from a plan to knowing what it will cost) An ability to produce implementation plans from high level strategy.

The Institution wishes to broaden the representation of the Group and applications from younger members are encouraged.

These skills may have been demonstrated through your involvement with a range of organisations (e.g., work, academic, charitable, professional bodies etc.). We are committed to collaborating closely with you to provide maximum flexibility, and to ensure that your volunteer responsibilities fit around your personal and professional commitments.

There are usually six meetings of the Strategy Committee per year, one of which is an in-person meeting, the rest taking place virtually. The time commitment will be approximately 0.5 days per month.  The term of office is three years with the possibility of renewal for a further term.

IMechE values diversity and is strongly committed to providing equal opportunities for all applicants. We want to ensure you perform at your best and experience no barriers in the selection process. Please do let us know if you require any adjustments in the selection process, for example when completing the application form or at interview stage. To discuss any adjustment requirements please contact diversity@imeche.org
