IMechE signs agreement of cooperation with Iranian Institute of Mechanical Engineers

Institution News Team

The agreement was signed at the end of September with John Hilton

The president of the Iranian Society of Mechanical Engineers (ISME), Professor Haeri Yazdi, and our Iran country representative, Dr Ahmad Arshi, attended the Institution at the end of September to sign an agreement of cooperation between our institutions along with John Hilton.

The purpose of this agreement is to provide a basis for the development of mutual understanding and friendly co-operative relations between the two societies. The international collaboration should serve as encouragement to promote mechanical engineers and the IMechE in Iran, as well as to collaborate on the events throughout Iran.

Professor Moammad Reza Ha’iri Yazdi, president of the ISME, said: “This is the result of a two-year effort by a number of people both at the IMechE and ISME. More than 2,000 universities in Iran have some form of a Mechanical Engineering program with more than 100,000 students in and the presence of IMechE should have been felt much earlier. Iran is third in the world with the most engineering graduates after Russia and US.”

He added that the status of chartered engineer would bring mechanical engineers in Iran recognition in energy, marine and transportation industries.

The alliance looks to advance the common aims of the societies and, through them, facilitate the promotion of scientific and technological exchange and development in mechanical engineering. One way the societies aim to achieve this is through encouraging members from the respective organisations to attend joint events that will be organised to disseminate and exchange of technical information will take place.

Dr Ahmed Arshi, the Iran country representative, said: “We’re hoping to enhance ISME’s presence nationally and internationally with the access to the wealth of experience accumulated by IMechE. We have a large population of mechanical engineers who would be interested in collaborating with the British industry and institution, which will create a bilateral contribution.”

One point of focus brought up during the meeting was promoting and supporting female mechanical engineers in Iran. Yazdi added that women make a vital contribution to the different disciplines within mechanical engineering in Iran and constitute more than 20% of the mechanical engineers in Iran.

The ultimate goal for ISME is to promote professional engineering concepts among Iranian mechanical engineers and utilise IMechE sources for professional development through this agreement.
