Do you or your colleagues need support with helping engineers gain registration? Perhaps you’d like to have your graduate training scheme accredited? Would you like to host a site visit to showcase your organisation to the local engineering community?

You need to get in touch with the Membership Development Team. As the public faces of IMechE in the Regions, they can explain the wealth of opportunities that may be realised by exploiting membership and registration with engineers and their employers.

Based throughout the UK and further afield, the Team is adept at forging strong relationships. They bring alive the concept of membership to those they interact with, providing guidance, sharing relevant anecdotes and useful case histories. They demonstrate how engineers can benefit from membership including:

  • Getting involved with their local Region or Area Committee
  • Taking part in the Challenge events
  • Using the Support Network – this includes career coaching for members between jobs
  • Accessing the excellent resources in the library
  • Using the superb networking opportunities that are available by getting involved with the Divisions and Groups
  • The wide variety of training courses provided by the L&D Team
  • Volunteering activities - STEM, Acting as a Professional Review Interview Assessor, Serving on a Committee, Being a judge at one or more of the competitions and events arranged by IMechE

In addition to regularly being invited onsite by employers for in person workshops and presentations, the Team also delivers a portfolio of virtual events. These allow engineers to access help in a way that suits their work schedules and other commitments.

In 2023, over 4,000 engineers took advantage of these online sessions. Topics covered include Gaining Registration, Top tips for writing up the application form, Upgrading to Fellow, Preparing for PRI and Using IMechE membership resources to achieve CPD goals.

Sandra Mulligan, Senior Membership Development Manager, UK commented ‘Everyone in the Team enjoys meeting engineers and learning about the interesting, demanding and innovative activities they undertake on a daily basis. We explain and provide clarity around how their day jobs can map against the UK SPEC competence requirements. We demystify the various IMechE requirements and provide clear and supportive guidance on the processes attached to all grades of membership’.

‘It’s very rewarding when an applicant is successful and able to progress in their career, due to the support that has been provided by the Team. We collaborate with colleagues across the entire Institution. We help make membership tangible, connecting like-minded progressive engineers in industry and academia, helping them to forge relationships and leverage the benefits of their IMechE membership. Evidence indicates that there is strong demand for the services we provide. We are all looking forward to meeting many new engineers in 2024’.
