Institution news
Terry presented Professor Alfonso Ngan, the university's Head of Mechanical Engineering, with a commemorative certificate and a copy of the Engineering Archive for Hong Kong University. He was also able to meet students and Young Members from the university.
During the visit Terry also met with industry leaders representing engineering employers in Hong Kong, as well as members of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), with which the Institution maintains a close relationship.
There was also an opportunity to travel to Southern China , where the President-Elect was able to visit Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology (GDAST) and South China University of Technology (SCUT).
While at SCUT, he visited their Formula Student team, who were busy at work getting their EV car ready for FSAE China.
The team had just started to move into AI and are modifying one of their previous electric cars with autonomous capabilities.
Guangdong Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (GDSNAME) and Shenzhen BOAO Energy Technology Development Co Ltd also had visits from Terry during his time there, with the latter providing a great opportunity to see some of the work being done to develop solid state lithium batteries.
Commenting on the trip, Terry said,
“Although Hong Kong was going through some difficult times it was greatly appreciated that the Hong Kong Branch team went to such great lengths to allow this visit to go ahead. It was my first opportunity to meet IMechE members in the Hong Kong Branch and see first hand the great work this highly motivated team are doing. The strong connectivity they have with the senior leaders in major organisations in Hong Kong was very noteworthy, the strong ties and close working relationship they enjoy with HKIE and the very dynamic young member fraternity they nurture. It was particularly pleasing for me to have the chance to meet the Formula Student team at SCUT, by any standard, a strong global FS team."
"Finally, it was a great honour to meet Professor Ngan at Hong Kong University, although we weren’t able to celebrate the 100th anniversary in quite the way we had planned due to the travel disruptions, we did manage to meet and talk about the great relationship between HKU and IMechE and celebrate the centenary milestone in our relationship”.
Thanks to the Hong Kong IMechE members together with Jenny and Christina in the IMechE Hong Kong office who supported this visit.
