IMechE call for evidence: Technology in sport

Institution News Team

In 2012, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers published Sports Engineering: An Unfair Advantage?, a report that examined that effect that technological progress has had professional sporting competition at the highest level.

A decade on from the Sports Engineering: An Unfair Advantage? Report, and ahead of the 2021 Olympics and Paralympics, the IMechE is seeking expert views on what the main developments have been since and what might be the transformational technologies just over the horizon.

Please use this Survey Monkey questionnaire to give your answers to any of the following questions. There is no requirement to answer all.

  1. What do you think have been the most significant changes in sports technology in the past 10 years?
  2. What do you predict will be the most significant changes over the next 10-20 years? What are the regulatory and ethical issue that will need to be considered in relation to the use of these technologies?
  3. How has the pandemic and the delay in the Olympics impacted the sports engineering industry?
  4. Is technology encouraging the Olympic Games and other elite sports to be less inclusive due to less developed countries lacking funding and therefore accessibility to these new technologies?
  5. Could technology in sport be used to improve children's well-being and fitness? In what ways?
