Daniel Kenning
Daniel Kenning represented the Future Climate – Engineering Solutions project on behalf of EESG at the United Nations climate change conference in Warsaw in November 2013.
The Future Climate – Engineering Solutions project is a global alliance of professional engineering associations working to develop, share and implement best practice in national energy planning. It started as a project of the Danish Society of Engineers (IDA) in 2008 and now exists as a stand-alone project. The project has a rotating leadership; it was led by Dr Alison Cooke FIMechE, with staff support from the Institution, from 2009-2011. The project is being led by Daniel Kenning FIMechE until hand-over to the next country (TBD) in 2014.
FC-ES has had a permanent invitation since 2008 to participate in the United Nations COP process. Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, put engineering at the centre of her vision. She said: “The challenge we face calls for nothing less than a transformation of the world economy onto a green, sustainable pathway. Technology, both for adaptation and for mitigation, cannot but be at the very centre of this transformation”. The project has been involved with every COP meeting since.
The project has run events at COP designed to establish national engineering teams and to link to government departments responsible for national energy and climate planning. The network now comprises the national engineering institutions from 24 nations, and an increasing network of national governments.
